Melissa White Melissa White is a vice president, director of international rights, and literary agent at Folio Literary Management. He began his career in New York, working for New Line Cinema and Alan Pakula Productions, before relocating to Los Angeles, where he lived for 10 years, working as an executive for Warner Brothers, Sony and Disney. While books have always been his primary focus, he has also pursued and developed ideas from original screenplays, pitches, comic books, theater, journalism, sports, and other sources. Internships An internship at Folio Literary Management is an educationally based program consisting of two parts: first, it provides a comprehensive introduction to the world of publishing through specific examples, stories, handouts, and practical information about the day-to-day world of publishing and agenting; and second, Folio interns will work closely with one or two Folio agents to develop the intern’s understanding of publishing through a variety of tasks. Some of these tasks may include: Learning to evaluate query letters and manuscript submissions; Assessing the process of editing manuscripts and nonfiction book proposals; Perfecting the art of the pitch letter; Becoming proficient in the etiquette for communicating with authors, editors, and publicists; and analyzing the ins and outs of publishing contracts. Things to consider Interns may be either in our New York offices or remote, depending on the intern. Interns will receive a stipend of $1000 payable half at the beginning of their internship and half at the end of the internship. Ideal interns will be interested in both the business and editorial side of publishing. They should be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (especially Outlook), exhibit strong research and writing skills, and have a keen editorial eye. We require a minimum of 16 hours weekly for both in-office and remote internships. Emily van Beek Looking for picture books by author/illustrators, middle-grade, and young adult fiction. MIDDLE-GRADE: I’m currently on the look-out for unique and distinctive voices. Katherine Latshaw I’m looking for commercial nonfiction: cookbooks; lifestyle; memoir; pop culture; health & wellness; social media-platformed projects; incisive essay collections; illustrated/gift books; feminist and underrepresented voices; select fiction. Prior to that, I worked at packager and literary agency Stonesong, where I participated in every facet of book production, from sales to photo shoots to edits and design. For nonfiction, I will often brainstorm with clients who have the requisite knowledge and platform but aren’t sure how to harness that into a saleable concept.
