About Folio
Folio Literary Management, LLC, is a full-service literary management company with offices in New York City and Washington, DC. We represent debut authors as well as established authors, and we sell book rights in the U.S. and around world.
At Folio, we believe in a very hands-on approach, working closely with our authors to develop their ideas into the most marketable books possible. What’s more, we are the only literary agency in the U.S. that supports our authors well beyond negotiating contracts and selling rights – by providing marketing and speaking opportunities, as well as close ties to licensing agents.
Our Approach to Marketing and Publicity
With hundreds of thousands of books published around the world every year, the task of marketing and promoting many titles is increasingly falling onto authors' shoulders. In many cases, however, writers don't know how to market their work, and they often don't know where to turn for help. Folio can help. We’re not here to replace or substitute the work currently being done by publishers: we work as partners with our publishers to enhance their publicity and marketing efforts. In the past, our contributions to the publisher's publicity effort have included:
- Following a publisher's "wish list" to inform likely readers, reviewers, and/or special groups (including book clubs) about an author's work.
- Creating our own databases to reach specific target audiences.
- Generating ideas about how to reach particular audiences, and then working in unexpected ways to reach that readership.
- Working long past the date of publication to continue to publicize our authors work. (Although each project is different, typically publishers spend no more that a couple months, if that, promoting any given title.)
An Individualized Way of Thinking
Publishers are great at selling books. At Folio, we concentrate on what it takes to sell your particular book. We determine the likely readership for your book, and then work aggressively to find creative and innovative ways to reach that audience. Here are some specific examples of what we've recently done to support our authors and their endeavors:
- Created a database and materials for an e-mail blitz targeted toward Civil War enthusiasts. This included thousands of Civil War bookstores, museums, round-tables and re-enactors across the U.S. The promotion efforts resulted in speaking engagements, book-signings and tremendous word-of-mouth to an audience passionate about the novel's topic. (Oh, and did we mention? The novel landed on the New York Times Best Seller List.)
- Targeted mailings to the Jewish community through more than 100 newspapers, 850 synagogues, 250 community centers, and Jewish Book Festivals across the US, to promote our authors with works of biblical-themed fiction.
- Promoted an author's first book (of a three-book series) by creating a database and putting together a mailing to independent mystery bookstores.
- Developed a comprehensive Internet chat, review, and interview campaign to promote a work of romantic suspense (A great way to get the romance bloggers talking.)
- Arranged author appearances not only in expected places (like book fairs and bookstores), but also in some off-beat venues - like wedding conventions, beauty salons, and Japanese temples.
